When spring comes around a lot of us focus on our homes only, by getting rid of our junk and cleaning those hard to reach places we had no time to get to during the past year. Well what if we went a little further and started not only cleaning our homes, but our lives. Just imagine what if we spring cleaned our minds and lives too? Below are four areas that I believe if we spring cleaned, some of us would be so much happier.
1. Negative thoughts and stinking thinking. Being a Chief in the Navy, I spend most of my days motivating and encouraging Sailors and civilian employees. The hardest part is getting them to get past their negative thoughts and helping them to see that those thoughts are just self-destructive myths. If your mind is plagued with negative thoughts or plagued with stinking thinking, its time to do some spring cleaning of the mind. Such a filthy mind will only hold you back from reaching your full potential.
2. Bad relationships. Some of you are still in a bad relationship or friendship that you know you really need to get out of today. I am not an expert on relationships so I’ll leave that alone, but I do know a lot about bad friendships and I personally, have no problem downgrading a close unsupportive friend to a unsupportive acquaintance. I no longer have the time or the patience to keep people in my life who suck my energy or sprinkle drama throughout my life. There is an old famous saying that birds of a feather, flock together….That’s so very true.
3. Personal life distractions. If you believe that you can achieve so much more in life you’re probably right. What I have found is that most of us have personal distractions in our lives that hinder us from pursuing what we were created to do. You will have to do your own introspection to figure out what your personal distraction is that’s holding you back from fulfilling your dreams. For some it could be as simple as watching too much television. For me it was the fear of failing. Figure out what’s your distraction and mentally spring clean it out of your mind. Always remember its better to have tried and failed, then to have not tried at all.
4. Your finances. Your finances effects your life in so many ways, and if it’s a hot mess, more than likely your life reflects that. Spring clean your spending habits, monthly budget, and debt. If you didn’t know, financial ignorance can cost you money, so get educated and financially fit.
I spent most of my life not living life, but letting life live me. It’s not enough for me anymore to not enjoy my life or live below my privilege. When I started getting rid of my debt, I realize that I had the responsibility to take care of my life, and not just watch it go by. God has the ultimate control of my life, but with his help I believe that I am creating more moments of happiness one day at a time. I have been spring cleaning other areas of my life and it has been so freeing for me.
So this Spring, don’t just stop at cleaning your home, but spring clean some parts of your life, that no one sees but you. Those hidden parts when cleaned will not only make your life better, but those around you too.
If you are older (you know what I mean) and started to get your finances together a little later in life, I would love to share your story on Debt Free Martini. Send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and be an inspiration to others.
